Sri Lanka Salary, EPF & Tax FAQs
Employees contribute 8% of their total monthly earnings (Basic Salary plus fixed/cost-of-living allowances). The employer must contribute an additional 12% into the employee's EPF account. In total, 20% of your earnings are saved into the Employees' Provident Fund each month.
The Employees' Trust Fund (ETF) is 100% funded by the employer. The employer contributes 3% of your EPF-liable earnings every month. Nothing is deducted from your salary for ETF.
The first LKR 100,000 per month (LKR 1,200,000 per annum) of personal income is tax-exempt. Earnings above LKR 100,000 per month are taxed progressively in tiers of 6%, 12%, 18%, 24%, 30%, and 36%.
Reimbursements and true non-fixed allowances (such as actual travel claims and overtime) are generally exempt from EPF deductions. However, all cash earnings are counted as taxable income for APIT calculations if your total earnings exceed LKR 100,000 per month.
Gross Salary is your total contracted monthly wage (Basic + Allowances). Cost to Company (CTC) includes your Gross Salary PLUS the mandatory 12% employer EPF and 3% employer ETF contributions that the company pays on your behalf.
